MUSIC AND ARTS MINISTRY
Worship is the central activity of our church. We gather on Sunday mornings to express our praise to the sovereign Lord, our thankfulness to our gracious God, our contrition to our forgiving Savior, our dependence on the Holy Spirit, our receptivity to the Living Word, and our fellowship with Christ’s body, the Church.
Music is a significant part of worship. Our music includes a wide range of styles from classical traditional sacred music to contemporary worship and praise songs to bluegrass, gospel and spirituals.

There are a number of opportunities for participation in the Music & Arts Program at Friendswood Friends Church:
Chancel Choir
The Chancel Choir sings at both Sunday services an average of 2 Sundays a month, plus singing at occasional special services and events. The Choir also presents two concerts each year, often in conjunction with other choirs, orchestra and soloists.
Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings, 7:30 – 9:00 PM. Childcare is provided. All are welcome. The only vocal/musical requirements are that you be able to match pitch and count to 4. If you can sing "Happy Birthday" with a group of people and not get odd looks because you are off in left field somewhere, you qualify! Very few in the choir are trained musicians, and many do not read music. Love of music and the desire to work with a group of delightful people to create a worshipful experience for the congregation are really all that is needed.
Persons interested in joining the Chancel Choir should call and speak with the Minister of Music (John Haw at 281-482-7821) prior to attending rehearsal for the first time.
"And The Glory Of The Lord" - Handel.
Chancel Choir 12/2/2007Praise Team
In order to explore more fully the large spectrum of contemporary Christian music, we have formed a Praise Team to lead worship services and to bring today’s praise and worship songs to a wider audience. The Praise Team leads worship each Sunday and presents special music one or more Sunday a month, normally when the Chancel Choir is off. The group consists of both instrumentalists and singers. If you play electric or acoustic guitar, electric or string bass, drums, or keyboards, you are encouraged to contact the Minister of Music (John Haw at 281-482-7821) about being part of this group.
Spirit Singers (Age 4 - 6th Grade)
This is a program that teaches the fundamentals of singing, rhythm, pitch, and choral ensemble sound. The Spirit Singers sing in worship several times a year, in addition to special Christmas and Spring programs. Rehearsals are Wednesdays, 6:30 to 7:30 PM, in conjunction with Friends Club.
Sound Ministry
This group of dedicated and talented individuals works to operate and maintain the sound, lighting, and audio-visual systems in the Worship Center, Chapel, Friends’ Center, and other areas of the church during services and special events. If you would like to serve in this group, contact the church office.
Over-The-Hill Gang
The Over The Hill Gang is a group of instrumentalists and singers whose primary mission is to bring joy to the hearts of people through music, laughter, fellowship and love. The band was founded in 1999 to entertain seniors living in assisted living and nursing facilities. While that group remains the focus of our mission, over the years we have extended our reach to include elementary schools, church groups, community seniors’ organizations, civic clubs and organizations, and special needs groups.
Our music includes gospel, old time favorites, western, patriotic and special event music. Our director, Marian Gordner takes great care to tailor each program to the specific audience and occasion. For information, click here, or contact Marian Gordner 281-482-7019 or at email othg@att.net.Ringing Friends
Ringing Friends are a unique English handbell choir that plays about once a month at both Sunday services. They often play for seniors living in assisted living and nursing facilities. They also play for special occasions.
Many of the bell ringers do not read music, therefore all of the songs are color coded WORDS. So if you love music and can read and count to six, you qualify for the group.
Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings 5 – 6:30 p.m. If you are interested in being a part of this fun ministry, contact Marian Gordner 281-482-7019 or at email othg@att.net.Friends Brass
The Friends Brass is made up of both students and adults, and plays on special occasions such as Christmas, Easter, and other services. The group is not restricted to brass instruments; all wind instruments plus percussion are welcome and encouraged to participate. Rehearsals are as called by the Director. For further information, contact the Minister of Music.
There is a place in the Friendswood Music & Arts Ministry for everyone, whether in a choir, instrumental group, on the sound and lighting technical team, or in other artistic expressions of worship and praise.
